Case Study: CrownPeak
CrownPeak, a 40-person software company in Los Angeles, California, was used as
the model for the initial study. The net environmental impact for CrownPeak in the
year of the study was translated to $1,286.65, of which $493.60 was for Carbon Emissions
Offset and $793.05 was for Non-Carbon Environmental Impact. Because the cost to
become sustainable was low and the halo-effect for the company is relatively high,
the board approved declaring CrownPeak a sustainable company in the year of the
study, 2007, and for all future years. The company was able to issue a statement
on its web site that it is a sustainable corporation. Along with this statement,
the company will publish the actual calculations, along with the steps it plans
to take to reduce impact in the future. A figure of approximately $4/short ton of
CO2 was used for the calculation of emissions. That figure was taken from the Chicago
Climate Exchange, a market for trading carbon credits. CrownPeak will decide at
the end of each calendar year, where to donate the offset costs for carbon and for
non-carbon impacts. At the time of this study, CrownPeak was planning to donate
the carbon emissions dollar offset to one organization and the non-carbon impact
offset to a separate organization.
